Relocating to Burlington Family Guide

Why Choose Burlington?

While Oakville often gets the spotlight for luxury, Burlington offers a vibe that is slightly more relaxed, incredibly family-oriented, and centered around a stunning, accessible waterfront. For my clients moving from Toronto or arriving from Eastern Europe, Burlington often feels like the "sweet spot"—you get the high-ranking schools and safety of Halton Region, often with a bit more land for your budget.

Having navigated the relocation process myself, I know that you aren't just buying a house; you are choosing a future for your children and a community for yourself.

Here is my breakdown of what Russian-speaking families need to know about life in Burlington in 2026.

1. Education: High Standards & Newcomer Support

Education is usually the number one priority for my clients. Burlington falls under the Halton District School Board, one of the top-performing boards in Ontario.

  • Top High Schools: Nelson High School is renowned for its academic rigor and arts programs. Dr. Frank J. Hayden in the north (Alton Village) is a newer facility with incredible sports amenities and a very diverse student body.
  • French Immersion: If you want your children to learn French (a great asset in Canada), schools like Charles R. Beaudoin and Pineland Public School offer strong immersion programs.

🎓 Important for Newcomers

If your children are arriving from outside Canada, you will need to register through the Welcome Centre. While you are moving to Burlington, note that the physical Welcome Centre for our board is currently located in Milton (at the Gary Allan Learning Centre).

They will assess your child's English and Math levels to ensure they are placed in the correct grade. It is a very supportive process, not an exam to worry about!

2. Food & Lifestyle: Where to find "Normal" Food

Let’s be honest—finding good rye bread, quality deli meats, and farmers' cheese (tvorog) is essential for feeling at home. Burlington has excellent options so you won't miss out.

  • Denninger's Foods of the World: Located at the Burlington Mall, this is an institution. It’s perfect for European sausages, German breads, and imported goods that feel very familiar to the Russian palate.
  • Marilu's Market: A fantastic spot on New Street for high-quality produce and prepared foods.
  • Proximity to Starsky: While there isn't a Starsky in Burlington proper, the Hamilton location (Queenston Rd) or the Mississauga location are just a short drive away for your major monthly haul.

3. The Community Vibe & Neighbourhoods

Burlington is divided into distinct areas, each with a different "personality."

  • The Waterfront (Downtown): This is the heart of the city. Spencer Smith Park hosts massive festivals (like the Sound of Music and the Ribfest). It’s vibrant, walkable, and beautiful.
  • The Orchard & Alton Village (North): These areas are very popular with young families. The housing stock is newer, and the population is diverse. You will hear many languages spoken at the parks here, including Russian.
  • Roseland & Shoreacres (South): These are mature neighbourhoods with massive trees and larger lots. If you are looking for privacy and character homes, this is where we should look.

4. Commuting to Toronto

Many of my clients work in downtown Toronto but live in Burlington. The Lakeshore West GO Train line serves the city with three main stations: Appleby, Burlington, and Aldershot.

The express train to Union Station takes approximately 45-50 minutes. It is a very common commute, and you will find many professionals doing exactly the same thing every morning.
