Why Mississauga? The "Gateway" City

For many of my clients, Mississauga is the perfect compromise. It offers the job opportunities and transit connectivity of a big city, but with the parks and larger homes of a suburb. Unlike the quieter pace of Burlington or Oakville, Mississauga has a pulse—it's vibrant, diverse, and incredibly convenient.

It is also home to Pearson International Airport, which is a surprisingly big factor for my clients who travel back to Europe frequently or have family visiting often.

Here is my breakdown of what Russian-speaking families need to know about settling in Mississauga in 2026.

1. The "Taste of Home": It’s All About Starsky

I cannot talk about Mississauga to my Russian clients without mentioning Starsky Fine Foods. It is not just a grocery store; it is a cultural institution.

  • Two Locations: Whether you live in the east (Dundas & Hwy 427) or the west (Dundas & Winston Churchill), you are never far from fresh kefir, authentic rye bread, and the best deli counter in the GTA.
  • Local Gems: Beyond Starsky, you have Eddie’s Meat & Deli for unparalleled smoked meats and Blue Danube Sausage House. You will never feel "homesick" for food here.

2. Neighbourhoods: Matching Your Lifestyle

Mississauga is huge, and each pocket feels like a different town. I help my clients match their lifestyle to the right area:

  • Port Credit & Mineola (The "South"): If you love the water and a village feel, this is the place. It is premium and expensive, but the lifestyle is unmatched with walkable cafes and the marina.
  • Erin Mills & Streetsville (The "West"): This is the top choice for families. You get great schools (like John Fraser S.S.), newer homes, and the historic charm of Streetsville Village.
  • City Centre (Square One): Perfect for young professionals or investors. It’s all about high-rise condos, walkability to the mall, and being right in the action.

3. Schools & Newcomer Support

Mississauga is part of the Peel District School Board. Because the city is so diverse, the schools are incredibly well-equipped to handle students who speak multiple languages.

🎓 The Welcome Centre (Crucial Tip!)

If your children are new to Canada, you will need to book an appointment at a We Welcome the World Centre for an assessment before they can start school.

The good news? There is a main centre right here in Mississauga (located at Erindale Secondary School on Dundas St. W). This makes the registration process much smoother compared to regions where you might have to drive to a neighbouring town.

4. Commuting & Connectivity

If you work in Toronto, Mississauga offers the most options for commuting:

  • GO Train: You have two main lines. The Lakeshore West (Port Credit/Clarkson) runs all day, every day. The Milton Line (Streetsville/Meadowvale) is fantastic for rush-hour commuters.
  • Highways: You are at the center of everything. The 401, 403, and QEW all intersect here, making it easy to drive anywhere in the GTA.
