My Personal Journey: I've Been in Your Shoes
I don't just guide you through this process professionally; I understand it personally. I moved to Canada from abroad myself, and later relocated from Montreal to Oakville. I know firsthand the mix of excitement and anxiety that comes with packing up your life.
I know what it feels like to navigate new systems, worry about whether your children will adapt to their new schools, and search for that feeling of "home" in a new city. Who better to help you navigate this transition than someone who has walked this path herself? I am here to make sure your landing is as soft and successful as possible.
Moving to a new town isn't just about square footage and property taxes-it's about finding a place where you belong. As a realtor serving the Russian-speaking community, I help two main groups of people: those moving from Toronto seeking more space, and new immigrants arriving in Canada for the first time.
Here is what you need to know about starting your new life in Oakville in 2026.
1. Moving from Toronto: The "Space" Upgrade
If you are moving from North York, Etobicoke, or downtown Toronto, you are likely looking for quiet streets and better schools. The biggest adjustment my Toronto clients face is the pace of life.
- The Commute: Oakville is a commuter town. The GO Train from Oakville Station or Bronte Station gets you to Union Station in about 30-45 minutes. It is reliable, clean, and safe.
- More for Your Money: While Oakville is a premium market, your budget goes further here than in Toronto. You trade a narrow city lot for a proper backyard where your kids can actually play.
2. Relocating from Within Canada (Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver)
Moving from another province or a smaller Ontario city comes with its own set of questions. Having made the move from Montreal myself, I understand the nuances of inter-provincial relocation.
- From Quebec: If you are arriving from Montreal, you will appreciate the lower income taxes in Ontario, though you need to be prepared for different auto insurance rules and the Land Transfer Tax system. I can connect you with Russian-speaking lawyers and accountants who specialize in these transitions.
- From Western Canada: For my clients moving from BC or Alberta, Oakville offers a stable climate and a central location for travel. It is a strategic hub that allows you to be close to Canada's economic center without sacrificing the greenery and outdoor lifestyle you are accustomed to.
3. New to Canada: The "Soft Landing"
For families arriving from abroad, Oakville is often the first choice because of its safety and education system. It is consistently ranked as one of Canada's safest cities.
📚 School Registration Tip
If your children are new to Canada and English is not their first language, you will likely need to visit the Halton District School Board Welcome Centre for an assessment before registering.
Don't worry-schools here are very accustomed to welcoming international students. Neighbourhoods like Westmount and River Oaks have excellent ESL support programs integrated into their schools.
4. Finding "Our" Community
One of the first questions I get is, "Where can I buy normal food?" (meaning: rye bread, kefir, and good deli meats!). While we don't have a "Little Russia," we are surrounded by everything you need.
You don't need to drive to North York for groceries. Starsky Fine Foods (just on the Mississauga border) and Monastery Bakery in Glen Abbey are local staples. For fresh produce and European-style meats, Farm Boy is a favorite among my clients.
5. Beyond Oakville: Exploring the Neighbours
Sometimes, the perfect home is just a 10-minute drive away. I don't just sell in Oakville; I help my clients compare the entire region to find the best value.
- Burlington: Often more affordable than Oakville, with a stunning waterfront and a very family-friendly vibe.
- Mississauga & Etobicoke: If you need to be closer to the airport or Toronto, these are excellent options with diverse housing stock.
- Hamilton: For investors or those looking for character homes and rapid growth, Hamilton is the area to watch in 2026.
